I have recently been assigned a new pre-kinder classroom targeting 19 low-income students who arrived to school ready to engage in reading, writing, and math activities as well as playing in the pretend and learn center. At such an early age, my students will benefit from preschool despite being at-risk due to their social economic status. The students' first day of school was September 24th and on day one, they kept asking if they could read a book and be read to. Even though I wanted to focus on establishing classroom procedures and routines, I could not refuse their hunger to be read to. After our read aloud, the students are encouraged to retell the story through a series of dramatization in the pretend and learn center. From the youngest three year old to the oldest four year old, our class has already established a safe and welcoming classroom environment where each student will develop the joy of learning.
