Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are located in the heart of a large, urban neighborhood. The majority of students are of Hispanic ethnicity (74.0%) and also classify within a high poverty rate (79.9%) The poverty rate is the concentration of students enrolled at the school who qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price Meals Program.
The students in my science classes are all energetic, curious and excited about new learning experiences.
In addition to their academic studies, many of the students participate in extracurricular activities such as singing, acting, sports teams, leadership and cheerleading. Many of the students are particularly interested in the entertainment field, as one of our school magnets focuses on the performing arts.
My Project
While my students enjoy the lectures, group discussions and activities related to Chemistry and Physics, our school lacks the necessary laboratory supplies to provide hands-on experiments. I would truly appreciate the opportunity to provide my students a fully immersive learning experience that includes inquiry-based lab assignments as well as engaging visual demonstrations.
High school science should be a detailed introduction to explain the natural phenomena that exist in the daily lives of students.
In addition, it is also important to make our students aware of their environment and the scientific measures that can be taken to protect and conserve our planet's resources. Human consumption places stress on the natural processes that renew some resources and depletes those resources that cannot be renewed. Decisions about research and technology, such as those related to energy issues, involve assessment of alternatives, risks, costs, and benefits.
I'm requesting a Biofuels Ethanol Production kit. These kit will allow students to produce biofuels and ethanol, and ultimately allow them to understand the costs, and trade-offs of various decisions regarding their production.
Furthermore, the Electrochemical Treatment of Pollutant and Water Treatment and Filtration kits will allow students to comprehend the procedures of treating polluted water. They will examine the changes in the water after each treatment step is performed. They will also observe physical characteristics of water, such as clarity, color, odor, and how they are affected from the beginning of the treatment process until the end.
In the subject of Physics, the Building Simple Circuits, Electricity and Magnetism, and Electric Supply kits will allow my students to have hands-on experiences with building simple circuits, as well as analyzing the relationship between electricity and magnetism. With the electrostatic lab, they'll conduct experiments for studying static electricity. Using the materials provided, they can visualize charging by induction, repulsion and attraction of charges, discharge occurrences from points, surface distribution of charges and charging properties of different materials.
