Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an eighth-grade English-language arts teacher in an inner city high poverty school. My school focuses on preparing students from high-poverty areas for college. I am seeking funding for supplies to create student poetry anthologies. Every year I have challenged my students to create their own book of poetry based around a theme. I want to provide my students with the materials to make professional books they can be proud of and keep forever. It makes a tremendous difference when students want to make their project look the best because they have the materials to do so. My project needs blank journals that students can write their final poems in and decorate. The journals I am requesting will make their anthologies real books and make the students feel like real poets. I have noticed that when the students are given the materials to make beautiful projects, they put so much more effort into their work. In the past when I have done this project with my students, providing them with the blank journals has gotten them excited about writing poetry. They write about issues like death, family, friendship, and violence. Thank you for providing my students with the incentive to express themselves through poetry in a quality format.
