My Students

Bienvenidos! Welcome! Our school is currently welcoming several new students from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. These students are eager to learn English and are excited to be joining our diverse student population at our High School.

New ESL students are arriving to our school on a weekly basis.

Over the past several months, we have seen a particular rise in our Spanish speaking population. While these students share a native language, they come from a variety of different countries and educational backgrounds. One thing that they share is a desire to learn English and to feel that they are part of the community here in Pittsburgh.

My Project

The challenging part of being an ESL teacher seems to be getting students excited about learning to speak, read, write and understand English. For some students, English comes easily, and for others, learning English can take years (even the better part of their academic careers). While talking with one of my students about things he does at home to improve his English, he pulled a book out of his backpack and said, "I study this every night." The book was called "Ingles Para Latinos" (English for Latinos). As I flipped through the pages, I was impressed with the tips and techniques in the book and the clever ways that the authors make connections between learning English and learning Spanish. I think by obtaining and using materials that connect English to my students' native language of Spanish, I can build on what they already know and make them feel more connected to the process.

I have already seen the success that one of my students has had with the book 'Ingles Para Latinos' and I would love to share this book (and the other, similar, materials that I requested) with my other Spanish speaking students.

I recently opened a new class composed entirely of brand new Spanish speakers (and the class is growing weekly!). I hope to use these books and English vocabulary flashcards to jumpstart their learning process and to help them build a connection with the English language that will last a lifetime.
