My students are a special group of students. They come from a variety of backgrounds, in terms of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and family life. They also come in with a wide variety of interests and ability levels. All of these aspects bring a huge diversity to my room.
Many of my students are students who work extremely hard in the classroom and want to learn.
Many of them come into the room, asking, "What are we going to do today?" They get excited hearing about what we are going to do each day in the classroom. They become engaged in lessons and look forward to completing activities in the room. My students focus on math, social studies, and science in my room but incorporate many of the skills they learn in language arts into my classroom as well.
My Project
In fifth grade at the school at which I teach, many of us use project-based learning and hands-on activities in science and social studies, as opposed to just paper-and-pencil tests. This allows the students to practice research skills that they will continue to build on and use as they continue to get older. Students need access to resources to help accomplish this goal. Some examples of books that this funding will help get include, "If You Lived At the Time of the American Revolution," "What is the Declaration of Independence?," "The Boston Massacre," "The New Americans Colonial Times," and "Great Women of the American Revolution," just to name a few. These are all books that allow students access to a variety of print resources besides technology to encourage them in the use of different types of resources. These books would also encourage students to expand and improve their literacy skills.
The informational texts being requested will not only allow students to practice their research skills, it will also support their continued literacy and enhance their learning in other curricular areas, including science and social studies.
These informational texts will be used by 200+ students each year to achieve the goals previously mentioned. These texts will also help students to learn about a variety of topics and also gain experience with informational/nonfiction texts. Throughout the school year, students complete a variety of project-based learning activities. For example, for our project on the American Colonies, students are required to create a project about one of the colonies. Once we move on to the American Revolution, students complete a project in which they create a museum exhibit on a topic related to the war and then other students come visit. Having these books will help students be more successful in these projects.
