Due to testing, we have little opportunities to use the computer labs and technology within the building that are available to students, especially after winter break. I am a teacher who incorporates project-based learning into my instruction. Students complete several projects and other research-based activities in science and social studies. With some students not having access to technology at home and also the lack of available lab time due to testing, these project-based learning opportunities can be difficult to complete in some circumstances and causes the project-based learning opportunities to be fewer. Having laptops in the classroom to use would help eliminate those constraints. In addition, research skills are extremely important to have later on in life as well.
I also am a teacher who completed a Certified BrainPOP Educator program. BrainPOP is a website that has engaging videos about a wide variety of topics in all subjects. The students really enjoy these videos and are very engaged with them. In addition, there are a wide variety of quizzes and other activities that go along with each video. The issue is that many of the activities require a computer to complete, but with the lack of technology available due to testing, it is extremely hard for this to occur. These are activities that would incorporate many higher-level thinking skills as well as language arts skills that would require students to think critically. Being able to incorporate this resource in the classroom would be a huge benefit to students.
