Help me give my students the opportunity to use water exploration in their everyday learning.
I teach an Early Childhood Special Education classroom. The children range from 2 1/2 to 5 years old. There are various development delays and disabilities in the classroom including speech and language delays, social and emotional delays, and autism spectrum disorder. Most of the children have difficulty playing with toys and other children in the classroom functionally and may also have limited interests. A lot of toys in my classroom are outdated and I have limited supplies of age appropriate toys for the 2-3 year olds (chronologically and developmentally). We use toys to encourage communication, language, create imagination, and socialization among staff and classmates. I am looking to increase and update my dress-up and dramatization center in my classroom to increase all of these skills in all of my children.
My project consists of a lighted water table and various manipulatives consisting of floating alphabet matching, floating building blocks, floating colored boats, and a dumping and pouring station.
Children learn best through hands-on experiences.
Playing with water is an important part of child development. It stimulates a child's sense of touch and helps them to relax. Language development can also be increased by prompting them to use words, sounds, or gestures. It also teaches children socialization skills by encouraging children to play next to one another, share, take turns, and problem-solving skills.
I plan on using the water table on a regular basis. It brings many learning opportunities that can be introduced in the classroom. As already mentioned, my project also includes alphabet manipulatives, blocks which increase imagination and creativity, and dumping and pouring which increases problem solving. I believe my students will greatly benefit from having the Water Table Project in the classroom.
