Indoor Recess Rescue!

Help me give my students new indoor recess games and activities to keep us entertained when the weather doesn't cooperate!

My Students

The students at my school are from a rural farm community in Indiana. We have a small school at the edge of a large corporation. Our students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds. We are lucky to have great families that work hard and are involved in our school events, but we don't get a lot of extra funding from the state because our school does not qualify as a Title I school. Title I schools have a higher level of students that qualify for free and reduced-price lunches than we currently have.

My sweet kiddos are hard workers, but they have lots of extra energy and thrive during hands-on activities.

We try to keep moving around our classroom several times throughout the day to help with this. I also have tried to incorporate a flexible seating environment to keep their little bodies wiggling, while engaged in learning, while at our seats. We have had a lot of success when we use hands-on manipulatives and activities.

I love to provide learning opportunities that will get my students moving, thinking, and stimulating their learning by creating.

My Project

Indiana weather can be a little unpredictable, especially in the winter months in our rural area that basically is surrounding by cornfields. It is a beautiful scenery, but does not help break up the cold winter winds that make it seem more chilly on our playground area. During those cold winter months with low temps and on rainy days year round we need some new, exciting indoor recess items to keep the kids engaged and entertained. Each teacher picked out items that their students are requesting and those range from games and activities like Twister, Bananagrams, Perfection, Clue, STEM builders like Playsticks, Uno card games, Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect 4, Checkers, and even Jenga type games. It truly is something for everyone in the school from kindergarten to 5th grade!

Indoor recess does not have to be boring and with all these new exciting games and activities that will help keep our kids active and engaged all recess long!

The kids would rather be outside on the fun climbing equipment, but with all these new activities and games they will have fun on indoor recess too!
