My Students

We love Daily 5! This is the time of the day where children engage in reading, writing, and word work activities. This is our favorite time of the day because the children are allowed autonomy in choosing what they read, which builds an intrinsic love of reading for all of my students.

I teach 21 first grade students in a multicultural school.

There are approximately 550 students in our K-5 school in a suburban neighborhood. We have about 40% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. We have a close-knit small school feel and pride ourselves in our ability to grow all of our students, regardless of ability level. Our students love learning and the focus of our school for the past few years has been developing well rounded, motivated readers and writers. We began using Daily 5/CAFE as our reading structure a few years ago and it has been monumental in how we teach children to read. Our goal is to build reading stamina in our children and provide them with a variety of books and reading materials. We have spent the past few years building our classroom libraries to include a variety of fiction and non-fiction books in order to provide children with books that are of high interest and on their individual reading levels.

My Project

Each child in the school has his/her own book box in which to store their self-selected books. Each morning the children "book shop" when they arrive at school. During this time, they browse the classroom library book bins to find books that fit their abilities, needs, and interests. They store these books in book boxes that they keep at their seats and will use them during Daily 5 time where they are required to read to self or with a partner. They also pull these books out during any free time they may have during the day. The boxes my students have now are flimsy and falling apart. I replace these each year. We need more sturdy, durable boxes that can easily be carried to a cozy reading spot and can hold up to 20 high interest books. These new boxes will be used each day during the school year and will hold the children's most beloved books.

My students will benefit greatly from having these books boxes.

Students will be able to store them right by their seats and have easy access to the books they choose to read. New boxes will allow my students to keep books in order so they can read them over and over again. This will help build reading fluency. By choosing books they love, their reading motivation will increase, which will ultimately lead to a classroom of children who love to read for the enjoyment it brings.
