Individualized Math and STEAM Supplies

Help me give my students a hands-on math experience with pencil pouches filled with dice and individual art supplies such as paintbrushes, palettes, and Sharpies.

My Students

My students are a wonderful and diverse group of learners with a wide range of interests and learning styles. There is a wide range of reading and math abilities within my classroom. They thrive on hands-on learning activities throughout the curriculum, both individually and collectively. They love to learn and seek out new opportunities. Integration is a big part of my classroom; the students thrive on STEAM integrated activities because it helps them see the connections between what they are learning and the real world. They are constantly seeking to improve themselves and the world around them.

We practice mindfulness in our learning--a healthy and calm mind allows maximum learning, a better sense of classroom community, and a supportive working environment.

We learn from our common history and the history of our country. The students strive to make the world a better, more beautiful, place through their actions and attitudes. Our choices today influence the world around us, our classmates, and ourselves.

My Project

This year presents some extra challenges for teaching mathematics in an engaging, hands-on method. This project will provide the resources for me to create individual pouches of math manipulatives for the students to use at their desks. These materials will be used for concept exploration of fractions and decimals, as well as for practice with mathematical concepts. The students can use the ten-sided dice to generate decimal numbers to add or subtract. They can also use the dice to generate values for numerators and denominators in fractions. Additionally, the dice can be used for individual choice boards for math, reading, and history.

The paint brushes and palettes will allow me to continue to provide STEAM integration in my history curriculum.

The students study the Battle of Lexington and Concord, read the "Concord Hymn" to analyze the poetic imagery, and then create their own version of Monet's water lily and bridge painting after an artist study.
