Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

At KIPP Ascend Charter School students go to school for 9 ½ hours a day, they attend Saturday school twice a month and complete 2 hours of homework every night. They work hard to climb the mountain to college. Fifth grade is an important year at KIPP. Students typically enter KIPP as a fifth grader performing at the third or fourth grade level. In one year, our goal is to increase fifth grade achievement to grade level. The next three years at KIPP should push students beyond grade level and prepare them to enter the best high schools and colleges in the United States. In order to target individual student needs, we have begun Learning Teams. Learning Teams is a fifty-minute session held each day. It is designed to target student needs by giving students more instruction on the subject and skills they are lacking. Students move between the reading, writing, and math Learning Team depending on where their needs are. The effectiveness of Math Learning Team could be greatly increased with the use of the Saxon Math 6/5: 3rd Edition Test and Practice Generator. The generator is a CD produced in conjunction with the textbook series KIPP is currently using. The CD allows the instructor to customize practice for each individual's needs. Before Learning Teams the instructor would create a lesson for each student. The lesson would remediate the skills that were not mastered or extend the student's knowledge of math. Student mastery and confidence will increase with the use of the CD.
