Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a third/fourth grade combination classroom with Limited English Proficient Inclusion (all subjects) at a Title I school in Durham, NC. One of the challenges that I face with my students is the ability of students to read fluently so that they can comprehend what they are reading. 14 out of my 24 students are LEP. Many are struggling with pronunciation and comprehension of the English language. I have a group listening center in my room. I use this listening center daily for students who are working on fluency with reading, students that may have been absent and need to catch up, and to help my ESL students learn English. I use my listening center for practically every subject. It allows me to differentiate instruction for my students to meet their needs. However, I have noticed that students are struggling even during our self selected reading time. We could really use individual cassette and cd players and some books sets on audio. I will allow students to borrow these book sets to take home to help them to practice their reading at night. Many of my ESL students have parents that only speak Spanish. When they get home they don't have anyone to help them. Not only could I use the players for books on tape but also to send tapes of English lessons home to help them to learn English faster. Our students have to take an End of Grade Test. My third graders have to pass this test to go to the next grade. My LEP students have to show considerable growth to go to the next grade. This type of listening center would benefit my whole class and help them to pass this End of Grade Test. However, it would be extremely be benefical to my LEP students who need that extra support. I am asking for 4 cassette players with headphones and 4 CD players with headphones. In addition, I have selected some Books with audio (either CD or cassette) to supplement the few books on tape that I have in my classroom.
