My Project
I teach at a Native American magnet school in Minnesota. Our school's mission is to engage urban Indigenous students by integrating and reclaiming Native American identities, cultures, and languages through authentic academic experiences. My students deserve to see themselves in the literacy that we read every day.
I am a second-grade teacher, and I also run an after-school board gaming group.
I am an avid board gamer myself, and I have seen the ways in which gaming helps bring people together while having a common goal, so I want to foster that same love of gaming in my students.
I have found that in my board game group, several kids make gains in their math and in their social skills just by being given the opportunity to learn through play. Games also give students a chance to be with other kids they would never play with because they're either too shy or don't have the skills to make new friends. I love games and their power to overcome barriers in my classroom.
