My Students
I teach at a Native American magnet school in Minnesota. Our school's mission is to engage urban Indigenous students by integrating and reclaiming Native American identities, cultures, and languages through authentic academic experiences. My students deserve to see themselves in the literacy that we read every day.
Our school represents several different cultures and identities, and over eighty percent of our students are Native American.
Ninety-eight percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Over twenty percent are homeless and highly mobile. Native students have been affected by generational trauma and systematic racism, and our school is working hard to give students the education they deserve.
My Project
I am second grade teacher and I also run an after-school board gaming group. I am an avid board gamer my self and I have seen the ways in which gaming helps bring people together while having a common goal, so I want to foster that same love of gaming in my students.
Games bring kids together through play while fostering foundational social, emotional, and academic skills along the way.
I have found that in my board game group, several kids make gains in their math and in their social skills just by being given the opportunity to learn through play. Games also give students a chance to be with other kids they would never play with because they're either too shy or don't have the skills to make a new friend. I love games and their power to overcome barriers in my classroom.
