My Students

My students come from a community that constantly seems to fight against the progress of our schools. We can not pass a levy; we are constantly on the verge of losing more teachers; we are seeing a consistent decline in our school population. With the constant negativity, I want my students, many of which come from low-income households or have just been severely set back by the pandemic, to enjoy reading. Over the past few years, the Ohio Standardized testing has proven a difficult venture for our students. For several years, our scores have stalled. The texts and writing requirements are rigorous and difficult.

I want to prepare my students for standardized tests and improve their reading skills.

The best way is to prepare them using texts that are relatable and engaging to the students. Our students need and want to read texts where they can see themselves in the characters, plot, or themes. This is why I want to boost the amount of modern-day Young Adult literature in my classroom.

My Project

This project is asking you to help provide a class set of the novel "The Marrow Thieves" from the author Cherie Dimaline to expose my students to diverse literature.

This novel teaches about the lives of indigenous peoples in a post-apocalyptic world, more specifically Canada.

Not only will donating to this project help take off a financial burden for many of my students, donating to this project will help expose so many students about the experiences of indigenous peoples that many of them are completely unaware of. By opening up the minds of our students, we are developing stronger more aware citizens.
