Independent Reading Tote Bags and Fanny Packs!

My students need new independent reading tote bags and a special assistant teacher fanny pack to help organize our classroom books!

My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but, as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

My students love reading. One of the primary ways that my students access literature in the classroom is during independent reading, a time of day when they self-select complex texts that they can enjoy on their own. Every week, children select up to ten books, and it is their responsibility to take care of those books. Right now, we only have plastic bags to hold our books, and these rip every few weeks!

I am requesting durable canvas tote bags that can hold multiple books and will be able to last the whole year!

I am also asking for a fanny pack to hold unique materials like pens, markers, and pointers. An assistant teacher will use this fanny pack. The assistant teacher is a student in the classroom who supports me with general instruction. They are responsible for monitoring the work of other students, helping to write essential messages, and encouraging their classmates to do their best job. They get to wear a special fanny pack to demonstrate their commitment!
