My students need a variety of young adult novels for their major independent reading project that they will spend all year completing, as well as shelves for the the books.
On average, only 15% of African-American students and 17% of Hispanic students read at a proficient level in high schools across the country. In a high-need school, students need to see that reading for pleasure has more benefits for them, rather than hours of Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto.
Working in a school with a high diversity rate and low socio-economic status, already puts my students at a major disadvantage compared to other students on the other side of the freeway.
They have a passion for life, and want to succeed, but haven't been given the tools, either at school or at home to make that really successful in regards to literacy.
What I'm requesting is nearly $2000 in books and shelving for my classroom. The process of getting students excited for literature is to provide titles for them that can pique their interest. If you glance at the wide array of book options I'm requesting, students will see a swath of options from romance, to supernatural, to science fiction, or realistic fiction to memoir. These students that I teach have a wide array of interests, so the books I offer them in my classroom should reflect that. The novels are researched and of high interest to a variety of students at the sophomore level.
The shelving provides the necessary storage that just isn't in place at the moment in my classroom.
My students need to see the importance of reading and literacy development in their lives as they begin to head towards college entrance exams, state exams, and other endeavors.
Getting these students to read a relevant book could be the beginning of a love affair that they've never imagined or dreamed.
