Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a small urban school, with about 100 students per grade level. The student population in my world literature course consists of 25 students, mainly seniors as well as some juniors. They are hard working, creative, and passionate about social justice.
Most importantly, they are deserving of the chance to access a variety of books within the classroom.
As their teacher, my primary goal is to provide my students with the kinds of learning experiences that will enrich their lives and turn them into lifelong learners, and avid readers!
My Project
The objective of my World Literature course is to provide students with opportunities to read books from people of varying perspectives and experiences. During the course of the year, students are asked to choose a book within parameters relating to a time in history, a geographic area, or a cultural perspective.
As Sandra Cisneros once said, "Latinos in the US, we often don’t know our histories because Latinx history and literature is often not part of our schooling experiences." My goal for this project is to expose my students, the vast majority of whom are of Hispanic or Latino descent, to the stories of people who they can relate to, learn from, and be inspired by.
As the year progresses, so does the need for the classroom library to grow. The books selected for this project include classic novels by Latinx authors, as well as young adult fiction. These books will provide the current and future students in this course with a chance to experience the richness of Latinx literature.
