Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 25 third graders in a bilingual class. All of my students come from Spanish speaking households. They range from students who were born here to recent immigrants. Although they all speak Spanish, we learn a lot from each other about the different cultures that each student represents.

I teach in a low-income school where majority of my class receives free lunch.

They come to school ready to learn despite any hardships they experience at home. My students are hard workers who persevere through the tough curriculum and never cease to amaze me with their work. When students use a new vocabulary word in context, or show off their new found ability to regroup three digit numbers, I can't express how proud I feel of their accomplishments!

My Project

Let's admit it, sometimes learning can get boring. Trying to keep my students engaged is tough, especially in an increasingly technological world. By incorporating an iPad into independent work, students will get to increase their tech knowledge while playing with the Osmo Genius Kit. The Osmo Genius Kit has several games that help with problem solving, spatial awareness, and letter and number recognition.

My newcomers will particularly benefit from the Osmo while they learn new English vocabulary and manipulate letters.

Some of my students are still mastering number fluency, so the number component will help them with addition and subtraction practice. The tangrams and drawing components will help with developing creativity, math skills, and self-esteem.

The iPad will not only enable students to use the Osmo, but students will be able to use other learning apps throughout the day. We use apps such as Scratch for coding, Epic for reading online books, and KineMaster to create movies. Since my students may not have access to technology outside of school, I hope that providing this time will enable them to become tech savvy and encourage them to use technology to further their education.

The Osmo Genius Kit and iPad are excellent ways to build educational skills in an interactive way. Once students are familiar with using the tools, they will be able to take turns using this while I work with small groups. Less interruptions during small group-work, more productivity during independent work time!
