Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach science and writing to three groups of 4th grade students at Siler City Elementary School, a Title 1 school. Fourth graders in North Carolina are tested in writing, reading and math by the state.
Many times during the year, I work with small groups of students on their writing skills as other students are writing, doing independent work or learning from centers. The centers include activities for students to practice grammar, metaphors, idioms, main idea, punctuation or various other skills in writing. These activities are hands-on and allow students to check their work for immediate feedback on their answers. They also need to document their learning, so I can easily assess who is learning from which centers and who is having difficulty.
I currently keep my centers in manila folders, but the problem with this is that many parts of the centers fall out the sides. I often need to remake these centers or add copies of pieces to the centers that are missing. If I did not have to replace my center pieces as often, I know that I would use them more often in my classroom. I would like to start keeping my centers in folders (with pockets) instead of in the file folders that do not have sides. A colleague does this and she does not have as many problems keeping her pieces. Folders are more expensive to buy and much harder to come by in a school setting.
Students love doing centers and I think the folders would make it easier for students to keep track of the materials. It would also save time for me in not needing to replace missing parts as often. Students would continue to use these centers year after year.
