Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have too many students and too few supplies! I teach extended-day Kindergarten in a high-risk Title 1 school. I have 25 students, 13 of which are classified as English Language Learners, 1 being a refugee, and 2 more are diagnosed with developmental delays.

Although this is their first year of school, my students already show a wide range of abilities. A few know all of their letters and numbers and are ready to start reading, while too many of them don't even speak English yet. I am only 1 person with 25 children who each deserve to have their individual educational needs met.

To better serve the needs of each of my students, I need to teach them in a small group setting. That way, each group can receive the level of instruction that they are ready for. My readers can keep reading, and I can teach letters to the ones who need that. In order for me to teach in small groups, my other students must be able to work independently and productively in centers. They are very responsible and have done well, but I am finding that I am short in supplies. I am constantly making games that don't last because they are made of paper. I'm running out of time to make more! The games that you can help us buy are ones that the children can learn to use independently and they are sturdy enough that they should last me many years. These games teach vital numeracy and letter skills that my students need to practice! As they play these in small groups, their time away from me in centers will be as productive as the time they spend with me.

They will increase their numeracy and letter skills as they also learn to share and work together. It will also help me serve each child independently and give each one a better chance at success!
