My students need to improve their literacy skills across the curriculum by using Science World magazines to read current topics and using the dictionaries to improve on their language/writing skills.

My Students

My class rotates on a weekly basis going from 5 students to 20 students on any given week. They are very transient because of their behavioral issues. The students are sent for 5 to 15 days due to their behavioral issues. A few of the students are sent to us for longer periods of time. The student body comes from a rural setting, with boys out numbering girls 3 to 1. The students do not have reliable online services on computers or cell phones due to limited internet access and dead zones.

This transient movement has caused the majority of the students to be below level in ELA and mathematics which affects the science curriculum.

My Project

The students do not have enough science and technical vocabulary to hold discussions on science topics. By using the Science World magazines, we will incorporate the current event articles into the curriculum which will supply context clues through visuals and writing. This will help increase the science vocabulary usage.

Words that are not understood, the dictionaries and thesauruses will help expand their understanding and usage of the word (synonyms) to the work.

These words will be put into a vocabulary notebook builder for the students to edit and delete to improve the meaning, understanding, and usage of the word. The Building Vocabulary and Strategies book will be used to supplement the students in areas of weakness.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
