Our student body is one of the most diverse students possible in an intercity school. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Regardless of where they come from, each of my students should feel equally ready to face the world. It's my job to make sure they have as many opportunities as any other student in our country.
Many of our students are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical".
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
This is the next step in my project. The first step has been funded. I teach PreK-6th grade and it is difficult to buy or create rewards that will work for all grade levels. It’s important to reward behavior that kids can control. Among children, the difference between right now and tomorrow is a big difference. For all students it’s important that rewards be immediate.
Having the laptop will allow me to connect to the cricut and I will be able to make different types of rewards in my classroom.
With a laptop hooked to the cricut I will be able to create incentives for my students immediately. I can make gifts for my students or have the students help make them. Many times I can find things for a great price at dollar stores and then affix vinyl to them. The students can make stickers using the xyron machine, nothing like personalization to make someone feel extra special. Students can create t-shirts for team building activities by using iron-on lettering and printing it out. Students who show good behavior could make items for friends and other teachers. It helps them think of others by making things for others.
Research shows all motivating power of the incentives vanishes when there is a delay in receiving it.
