Increase Reading with Graphic Novels in the Classroom

Help me give my students access to graphic novels. They will provide my students opportunities to read and experience a variety of literature.

My Students

Do you remember getting hooked on a series of books as a child? Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt waiting for and then finally reading the prized next installment in your favorite series. My students share that excitement and joy of waiting for and then finally devouring the newest books in their favorite series. My students are hesitant about reading because they feel like they can’t read. I’ve seen the moment when a student finally finds that passion for reading. It’s a magical moment.

Students at my school are creative, compassionate and yearning to get their hands on new information.

As English language learners and students with disabilities, books are so important to my students and are truly valued.

My Project

Having a range of graphic novels allows for all of my diverse students to find something they may enjoy. My students don't have access at home or a desire to want to read outside of the classroom. However, I've increased the amount of graphic novels in my classroom this year, and I've seen a shift in students checking out books from my classroom library. Adding these additional graphic novels will allow for my students to have different genres to choose from.

I believe that there is a book out there for everyone.

In my experience, graphic novels appeal to a large audience, specifically my reluctant readers.
