This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Think back to when you were a child. When you didn't know a word, how many times did your mother or a teacher say, "Look it up!"? So, you pulled out your heavy hardcover student dictionary to find pictures of oak trees and hammerhead sharks. You found the word you wanted to know, and got back to your original task. My fourth graders, inner city kids in San Francisco, live in houses filled with jovial relatives and blaring television sets. 85% of them are classified as English Language Learners and represent the statistical "achievement gap". They do not have nice dictionaries with pictures of sharks. They have tiny vocabularies with words gleaned from the mainstream media. Furthermore, the challenges they face in "catching up" to their fluent English speaking counterparts is daunting. They need to learn over 30,000 words per year to begin to address the chasm between them and the monolingual mainstream. They have the intelligence. They do not have the tools. I want to offer them up-to-date, academically relevant instruction in English, including how to navigate a dictionary that will give them the autonomy to build their own vocabularies. I want them to fall in love with words, and to feel confident writing and speaking in any setting. With access to the Longman Dictionary, my students will gain the power to increase their knowledge, giving them a chance to be learners on an even playing field.
