Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach on the southwest side of Chicago. Most of my students come from low income families. The everyday items such as books, pens and hyenine supplies which we take for granted are often luxuries for my students.

For this project, I am focusing specifically on books.

I teach ELA and promote reading for pleasure every day. I have books at their disposal since many do not have extra funds to buy their own. I have a large library, but the students have specifically asked for magna and graphic novel titles. I want to make sure I have books that keep my students engaged which will ultimately lead to a love of reading.

My Project

Each day my students enter my room and read silently for 15 minutes. This daily habit is to help promote lifelong readers who read simply for pleasure. I have spent years building up my classroom library with high-interest novels to suit my students' interests and individual reading levels.

This year my students are begging for magna and anime, graphic novels, and LGBTQ titles.

They hand-selected the requested titles. I am thrilled that they actually want to read and are vocalizing their interests. I would like my bookshelf to be a haven for these readers.
