Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Diversity is, perhaps, the most salient characteristic of the student population at my school. Beyond representing a wide array of religious, cultural, socio-economic, and racial backgrounds, our students (many of whom come from disadvantaged households) also represent a dynamic range of gender identities and sexual orientations.

This explosion of diversity creates a unique opportunity for our students to exchange ideas and to debate long-held beliefs and customs, especially among groups who might often disagree.

My Project

All students deserve to feel welcome and safe in schools. All too often, however, schools are not welcoming environments for students who identify as LGBTQ+. In particular, trans and gender non-conforming students (and staff) can often feel alienated, rejected, and misunderstood at school, which can have dangerous repercussions for this vulnerable community. This is why the Gender and Sexuality Alliance at our school wants to encourage our entire school community to share their pronouns by wearing a pin on their lanyards, backpacks, jackets, etc. that display their pronouns.

Here's why pronoun pins can make a huge impact, and even save lives: according to the Trevor Project, an organization devoted to preventing suicide among LGBTQ+ youth, "at least one LGBTQ youth between the ages of 13 and 24 attempts suicide every 45 seconds in the U.S."

However, "LGBTQ youth who report having at least one accepting adult in their life, such as a coach, teacher, or parent, were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt in the previous 12 months" (Trevor Project). These statistics highlight the importance of ensuring that schools help LGBTQ+ students feel safe so that we can save lives.

Schools have a responsibility to address the needs of this vulnerable population. One way that we can support LGBTQ+ students (in particular Trans and gender non-conforming students) is by normalizing the sharing of personal pronouns (she/her, he/him, they/them, etc.). This practice helps students to feel comfortable being exactly who they are and it creates an atmosphere of openness and acceptance for everyone in the school (including staff!).

We plan to give away the pronoun pins as part of an educational campaign to encourage the celebration of diversity, inclusion, and acceptance of ALL human beings in our school environment--just as they are.
