Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
On average, students in my district can only read at a 3rd-grade level. My district introduced a new initiative to increase literacy for all students across disciplinary subjects. This got me very excited to start a mini-library in my science classroom. I teach Chemistry and AP Environmental Science to students at a Title I school. Every year I am so blessed with amazing kids and this year I am ready to give them more. Not only will my library have books on science, but there will be topics on art and identity.
It is essential for students to have access to a diverse range of literature that expands their understanding of science, art, race identity, and gender identity.
My goal as a teacher is to engage students in science by having them develop their own STEM identities. These books will not only enrich students' academic interest but also encourage them to explore their own unique identities, develop a sense of empathy, and become agents of positive change in their communities.
Science does not have to be boring or bleak. I want to show students how beautiful science really is. A majority of the science books are focused on art and photography in the field to initially peak students' interest. There are some fiction stories in there for students who love to get lost in books regularly. There are novels centered on the struggles of marginalized groups and the history of them. I really want the library to also be a reflection of their teacher, so they can continue to know that they are learning in a safe space.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my new project. I am very excited about it and thankful for any contributions in advance!
