Inclusive Classroom Resources for a Student Who is Legally Blind
Help me give my students understanding of their peer who is legally blind as well as access to resources for this young scholar to navigate the classroom with his special needs.
The school I work at is racially and ethnically diverse. In fact, more that 30 different languages are spoken by our student body. Approximately 75% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
Diversity is the greatest asset to my school.
This school year, we have a student who is legally blind. With the unique learning needs of this scholar, I must find ways to adapt our learning environment to meet their needs. This project will go towards equipment that will help this young scholar navigate our classroom, their learning, and our community. The project will additionally have resources for the class to understand how to be inclusive of their new friend.
My Project
This is my first time ever working with a student who is completely blind. Our district is extremely limited in resources students who are legally blind. Some of these include books in braille as well as books and resources for the rest of our classroom to learn more about how to be inclusive of their new friend. The items purchased for this project will include some of these books and assistive technologies to help the student have access to literacy, math, and other content areas. Other items in this project will include literature and resources for the rest of the class to understand what the world is like for their new friend and how they can be more inclusive themselves. I want to create a welcoming environment for this new student and would pass these resources one from year to year so that no matter what class this scholar is in, the community we be equipped to meet their needs.
