Our students come from many diverse backgrounds, with 100% of our students receiving free lunch. They attend an inner-city school where more than half of the students commute for the education we provide. We have healthy foods and a garden, and we speak seven different languages at home.
Our school is a bright, happy place where a university education is our goal!
Students learn in classrooms where experience solidifies the curriculum! Our walls are covered in student innovation and creativity! Students are always encouraged to voice their opinions!
My Project
This year, after 29 years of teaching I integrated special education students into my general education classroom. 7 special education students moved into a 5th grade classroom, where they were exposed to the common core curriculum everyone deserves.
The "experiment" of inclusion, turned out to be a benefit to everyone involved!
We all made improvements! I became an inclusive teacher, the empathy of my general education students grew, as did the exposure for my special education students!
We needed some tools to ease the inclusion. Comfort in the way of easy writing (triangular pencils and holding foam grips), sitting (tactile cushions for comfort and movement), and an occasional stand (standing desk for energetic students), would help all involved.
