Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mathematicians. They question the world around them, develop new ideas, and are learning how to advocate for themselves. My students are eager to learn, understand, and to create change. With access to the appropriate resources, loving encouragement, and opportunities for engagement, all of my students thrive. When they have the opportunity to engage in 21st Century mathematics learning they are preparing themselves for the bright, successful futures that every single one of them deserve.
Approximately 95% of our school’s students come from low income backgrounds and 90% receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Ninety-eight percent identify as coming from a minority group. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures that need to be celebrated. Our school provides our students with the opportunity to celebrate who they are. We are an innovative turn-around school filled with students that deserve to have all of their dreams at the tips of their fingers. We are a school filled with love. We are strong in our belief that every student has what it takes to succeed. We are committed to helping our students become 100% college and job ready. We are a family.
My Project
Returning from Spring Break and immediately beginning state standardized testing is a difficult and stressful time for students. Especially when it is their first year of middle school and they are beginning to understand the importance of standardized testing.
My students are mathematicians, writers, scientists, and historians.
But they are also still kids. I want to utilize these materials as prizes to help drive their focus in the weeks leading up to testing. My goal is to provide incentives that still focus on academics and the arts in order to drive urgency around learning while still providing fun rewards for students who do their best every single day.
