This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My name is Kendall Maloney and I have the privilege to teach at a school in my community that my mother attended and my partner as well. Part of the reason I decided to teach here is the fact I get to really serve the community I live in.
In my current class, I have a wide variety of students who come from a wide variety of circumstances.
I have young parents who are in school, some parents who are struggling to find work because of the pandemic, or other extenuating circumstances. Despite what my Pre-K scholars are going through, they come to school excited and happy. They are curious and enthusiastic, and, most importantly, willing to take risks in learning! This school year we have really been focusing on a having a "MINDFULNESS CLASSROOM". We spend each day in the beginning of setting the tone and creating a space of calm and Zen.
My Project
The materials that I have chosen will set up a space that is modeled after a TRANSCEND classroom. I am trying to set a safe space that is calming and relaxing for students.
In a transcend models it there is a lot of greenery, baskets, flexible seating and diffusers used.
The space is a place of comfortability and cleanness as well.
It is my goal to start the model in the school and other classes will want to follow. That way all kids in each grade level know there is a safe place in their school building and in each classroom.
