My Students

I have 26 students in my 5th grade humanities class. In this class, we focus on social studies, reading, and writing. My students come to me from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. As a 5th grade teacher, I understand that my students have begun to develop their own identities and sense of self. With this, comes a responsibility to ensure that all of my students are represented within my classroom library books.

My students may have common interests or share similarities, but it is their differences that make them uniquely awesome, and that should be celebrated!

To do this, my students deserve to engage with texts that are representative of all walks of life. Through books, we gain perspective, we develop empathy, and we connect through common experiences.

My Project

In our Refugee Unit, students will get the opportunity to learn about the experiences of refugees around the world. Through reading nonfiction articles, watching videos, and doing some independent research, students will develop the background knowledge and language to speak knowledgeably about the refugee crisis.

These novels will allow my students to get a glimpse of the experiences of refugees.

Having a variety of text sets will allow my students choice in what they read, while also ensuring that all students are reading about the same topic. Through book clubs, students will be able to discuss their novels, and how they connect to the greater learning of the refugee crisis and real-world examples. In the end, students will get a chance to synthesize their learning to generate their own opinion about the refugee crisis and who should be responsible for helping refugees.
