“Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of a larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books.” - Rudine Sims Bishop On of my goals as an educator is to help children develop their own sense of identity and belonging. Books, as Rudine says, act as mirrors, windows, and sliding doors. Children need diverse books to connect with and relate to characters like themselves, to gain perspectives different than their own, and to be a part of other worlds and experiences. Books teach us empathy, tolerance, and sometimes can even help us better understand ourselves. With these novels, students will get to choose from a variety of texts that can act as mirrors, windows, and sliding doors. Several copies of each book are necessary, so that multiple students can read the same book and participate in book clubs. The goal of book clubs is to nurture students' love for reading, while creating close-knit communities of life-long readers. Adding these diverse books to our classroom will allow for richer discussions and a deeper understanding of the differences that make us all wonderfully unique!
