My Students

I teach at a magnet school for gifted and high-achieving students. We serve students in grades 6-12 from throughout our district. Students test for admission, and most students are functioning above the 90th percentile. All students are working at least one grade level above their actual age. The students in my school are a true melting pot of nationalities, religions, and economic levels, but the common trait that they have is the love of being challenged and learning new things. My students challenge each other, and me, to learn more and do their very best, both in and out of the classroom!

My Project

I have a group of students who have been preparing all year for our state Mock Trial competition. They meet after school, mostly on Google Meet. In these meetings, my students collaborate with mentors, including a practicing attorney and several local law students. These mentors help my students to phrase their questions correctly, understand objections that can be used in the competition, and the procedures for introducing exhibits and qualifying experts to testify. With this information, my students are preparing to present both the plaintiff and witness sides of the case - as both attorneys and witnesses.

With the structure of this year's competition undetermined, and a school year that has been challenging, I want my students to feel like "real" attorneys when they compete in a few months - like the mentors that they meet with each week.

Regardless of if the competition is held in the courtroom, or in a virtual setting, leather portfolios and legal pads will help my students see themselves as the mentors who have been working with them.

Practice is difficult this year - as we are trying to do everything through Google Meets, but my students have never given less than 100%. There determination to meet after school - after attending 6+ hours each day of virtual classes shows their commitment and perseverance. With your help, they can have an accessory that truly helps them look the part of an attorney, a role which they have spent months preparing for.
