Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are ready for their next big challenge. This group of bilingual third graders has worked and grown all year long - and now they are ready to tackle their first novel in English. They are big fans of Dr. Seuss, but they need exposure to longer texts to be prepared for fourth grade.
My students are creative, curious, and avid bookworms - they're always asking to borrow my books!
As native Spanish speakers, they constantly need opportunities to practice and refine their reading and writing in English. Most of these opportunities occur in school, as many of my students do not have access to quality books in English at home. As they move to the next grade level, they will be expected to perform at the same level as their native English-speaking peers. They are a very smart group of students, but they would benefit from sharing the same text at the same time with all of their classmates.
My Project
I picked this novel, "Drita, My Homegirl," because it will offer my students the chance to explore the world through the eyes of someone quite different from them. My students really enjoyed our class unit on immigration, and this book offers a unique perspective on what it means to move to America. I hope that as the children of immigrants, my students will be able to make connections between characters who seem, at a surface level, to be quite different from them. Finally, because this book will be used as a class set, they will have a sustained opportunity to practice their fluency and comprehension in English reading.
I teach my students to be proud of their native language and celebrate their bilingualism, but I also know that proficiency in English is essential to their academic futures.
I hope through this book study to prove to them that they are fully capable of reading an entire English novel on their own!
