Improving the Future of Learning

My students need a kidney table, heavy duty stools, and yoga ball rings to make their learning environment better so they can focus on doing their best.

My Students

I haven't met my new crew for this year yet, but I will have between twenty and thirty fifth grade students. My room, no matter who I have, will be a creative, diverse bunch that is energetic and motivated to do their best.

Academically, I have the middle group of students.

I don't have the talented and gifted (TAG) nor do I have the students identified as having learning disabilities (LD). I get the honor of working with the English Language Learners (ELL). With this comes diversity and differences. I encourage those differences to be highlighted and celebrated.

My Project

Every year I have between twenty and thirty fifth grade students walk into my classroom on the first day of school. They are entering their sixth or seventh year of school. For some of them, they have already lost their motivation and drive to learn. They are tired of sitting all day in hard chairs while listening to the teacher go on about things they don't care about. They feel like they have no choice and no voice.

Last year was different.

Last year, I changed what a classroom looked like. I got rid of the desks. I let the students have ownership of their learning by giving them a voice. I let them move throughout the day. I let them decide where they learned best. I let them feel like they were in charge. I started the era of flexible seating in my classroom.

Last year I funded the change myself. I bought a futon, 2 saddle stools, 6 cushioned crates, 7 yoga balls, 3 coffee tables, and 2 moon chairs. My students loved the change. I want to improve what we have and add to our seating. Our learning environment would improve with a kidney table to be used for collaboration and small groups. Adding 6 sturdy stools and yoga ball rings would allow the tables to be used more effectively. Movement, choice, and having a voice within the classroom made amazing improvements for my students and I want to continue to make improvements for my students.
