Improving My Teaching Through National Board Certification

I need to register for this voluntary advanced certification to advance the quality of my teaching and learning.

My Students

My students attend a public high school of over 2,000 students in a large urban city. While the city itself has experienced a lucrative tech boom, most of my students have not benefited. COVID-19 has exacerbated the income gap in our city and distance learning is presenting many obstacles for teachers and students alike.

Yet, my students still log in to school every day with the desire to learn and grow.

My Teacher Academy students learning Child Development continue to tutor elementary school students online, providing much needed attention and connection to younger students during distance learning. Meanwhile, my Japanese 1 students have steadily developed their language skills in an extremely challenging setting by creating videos, audio recordings and written text using just their Japanese.

My Project

As a teacher in my seventh year, one of my goals is to continually reflect and grow in order to serve my current students even better. Though COVID-19 and distance learning have forced me to pare down my curriculum and connect with students through technology, it has also been an opportunity to re-examine what is truly essential to effective learning.

National Board certification is specifically designed to make this reflective process intentional and focused.

I started this process last year and found the intense review of my own teaching practice to be deeply meaningful. This year, my certification focus is on adapting and improving the capstone project for my Teacher Academy students. In the past, teachers planned, executed and reflected on teaching a lesson in elementary school classrooms, but this year they are creating materials for short tutoring sessions on Zoom and reflecting on that process. I am also working with a group of teachers at my school site and throughout my district to make this professional growth collaborative as well.
