My students attend a public high school of over 2,000 students in a large urban city. While the city itself is experiencing a lucrative tech boom, most of my students have not benefited. Over half of the students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch, and I see families displaced out of their homes or the city entirely yearly. Yet, my students come to school every day with the desire to learn. My Japanese students voluntarily chose one to study of the hardest languages because they have curiosity for a culture and country so different yet heavily intertwined with ours. My Teacher Academy students have an interest in working with youth and deepen their understanding of education, family and child service careers by studying Child Development and interning once a week at neighborhood elementary schools.
