My Students
The school is located in the inner city. It is a multicultural technological school that provides students with a total education in the areas of academic, social, and emotional learning from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 5. Because we are located in the inner city, the school has a very transit population. The school houses a Technology Magnet Program in grades 3 through 5. There are approximately 975 students enrolled, of which 97% receive free or reduced lunch. Approximately 5.5% of the school’s population includes students with disabilities. Three percent of the students are English Language Learners (ELL).
My Project
This year we are focusing improving the social-emotional health of our scholars. Some of our scholars struggle with many stressors. These stressors include childhood homelessness, parents who may be incarcerated, mental health ailments, and everyday stress as a child. We are working to use Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports to build systems capacity for implementing a multi-tiered approach to dressing the needs of our population. Yoga provides social, emotional, and behavioral support to our scholars in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5.
First, my scholars will see that stress can be managed through healthy living.
Scholars will use resources purchased to broaden their scope by using basic yoga techniques for thirty minutes increments. Yoga will be used to relax scholars, assist with anxiety, and assist with behavioral modifications. The school counseling will provide instruction on yoga in classroom guidance and small group guidance. These sessions will be provided on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week for thirty minutes sessions once in the morning and an additional afternoon session. Yoga will be provided as a stress reliever and an additional strategy to process and channel anger. Providing yoga will increase scholastic achievement, scholars will be able to focus on education and decrease anxiety among the scholars.
