My Project

My students are hard working, intelligent and flexible thinkers. I teach both math and gifted education classes, and my students range from grades 9 through 12. Earlier in the school year, several of them requested flexible seating. In February, I was able to buy a few adjustable standing desks to see how much students would use and gain from the desks.

Students said stand up desks keep them alert and allow them the space to move and think.

All of my students were given the opportunity to try the few desks I bought. They had to take turns and for several of them, they definitely missed using a stand up desk when they let other students try them out. The feedback I received from a majority of my students is that they were more comfortable and better able to focus and learn when they used the stand up desks. During state testing, most students chose to work at these desks.

Since the desks are on wheels, students can easily move them to different areas of the room. Students move desks to the board for a workstation, a window for better lighting, and to a computer for additional space and comfort. Some students slowly migrate around the room while they work and are deep in thought. The desks are on wheels, they are also easy to move and use when we sit in a circle for discussions. The additional movement in the classroom never causes distractions but gives students an additional tool to improve their ability to learn.
