Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach biology to 10th grade students. We are located in a historically under-resourced and 100% minority community. 100% of our students are from the surrounding community.

All children have dreams. Their ability to achieve their dreams is tied to their ability to access the world around them through text. Students in minority communities, for many reasons tied to the culture of living in poverty, are not exposed enough to text. In their lives, they will encounter "gate-keeper" texts from which they must have the skills to gather meaning. Equal to my responsibility to teach my students science is my responsibility to educate my students as members of our society, and to give them the resources necessary to succeed in all facets of life. Research shows that students in secondary classrooms who are given the opportunity to engage in content-area reading are able to improve their reading ability over the course of just one year.

I am eager to add to my classroom library these 13 non-fiction titles of various reading levels so students are able to work together in groups of four and help each other become better readers through discussing the books they are reading.

You have the opportunity to help build a knowledgeable, well-rounded, and literate generation. Help to level the playing field in our society so all students have the opportunity to grow up and achieve their dreams.
