Many of the motions involved in making art, such as holding a paintbrush or scribbling with a crayon, are essential to the growth of fine motor skills in young children. The goal in my classroom is for every student to leave Kindergarten with the ability to be creative and take pride in their work.
At my school, often many students are unable to correctly hold a pencil or use scissors to cut when they first enter Kindergarten.
My school is made up of 100% free and reduced lunch. Often times, most students enter my class unable to hold a pencil correctly and definitely unable to cut on lines or successfully cut paper. My school does not have an Art program or even funding to support it. Any money spent on Art either comes from the small teacher fund or out of the teacher's pocket. I believe students should have perfected their fine motor skills upon leaving Kindergarten.
My Project
Paint and glue projects take a long time to dry. There is very little room to lay the drying craft on the floor to dry over night. The Custodians are unable to clean that portion of the classroom. Students may step on each others work. A drying rack would allow the students to place their work in an appropriate place where it will not become damaged and keeps the room clean and organized.
Receiving the donations needed to purchase this rack will streamline my ability to continue to conduct an Art time in my classroom.
Often, teachers are deterred from pursuing an Art time due to the mess and time consumption. To the students, Art is fun. To the teacher it is educational. The students love Art. It gives them an opportunity to be creative and use their imagination and skills learned to make beautiful creations.
