Over the years my students enter my classroom not knowing how to hold a pencil, cut paper, or color. Parents do not have paper, scissors, or pencils at home. Parents write notes with crayons on napkins or bill envelopes. Even though Kindergarten is demanding it can also be enjoyable. Instead of sitting on the carpet for the entire day being spoon fed information or doing worksheets all day, art is a way for them to practice what they have learned and encourages individuality with a chance of remembering their experiences. They can create something they can take pride in. Our school does not have an art class due to district budget cuts. Budget restraints have decreased supplies and teacher money. I still find a way to do some activities however, so much more would be beneficial to the students. I work in a low income school so we only put the bare minimum supplies on a school supply list. Crayons, markers, and pencils are some of the common supplies.
