Immeasurable Growth: How do you Measure Personal Growth?

My students need 12 personal journals so that they may reflect on our class trip abroad before, during and afterwards.

My Students

My students have grown up in a world that continues to become more and more impersonal. I fear that they may not realize how much they will grow during our small trip abroad. A personal journal will help them to realize the emotional and personal growth that travel will bring upon them.

The students who will be traveling with us are juniors and seniors.

These young adults have matured so much in the last two years and are becoming quite the global citizens. The majority of these students come from non-English speaking homes, with parents who immigrated here for a better life. These parents can't quite imagine what their children are about to experience as they, themselves did not have the luxury of leisurely travel. As a result, these students will need special support in handling all that they will experience. For those who are too shy to confide in adults, this journal will be the perfect solution for a source of sharing.

My Project

I have a journal from every trip I have ever taken. I collect postcards from every city, business cards from every restaurant, train and subway tickets from every transit. These journals are a constant reminder of how far I have traveled both literally and figuratively. When abroad without parents, students experience a wide range of emotions. They are temporarily foreigners that are experiencing being excluded from a group and young adults away from parents, free to make their own decisions. A personal journal makes an excellent travel companion in which they can confide and collect memories. This will become the only true measure of their growth as well as a very unique souvenir for them to enjoy and share for years to come.

Please know that if you help us furnish this simple item, you will be giving these students the one souvenir that they will keep forever.

It will reflect what they saw, what they experienced, where they visited, and with whom they shared this life changing trip in ways simple photos will not.
