This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school, MHE, is one of the largest schools in my district. Currently we have almost 850 students and 80% of them are English Language Learners. Ninety-five percent of them qualify for free or reduce-price lunch. The majority of these students speak Spanish, but we have a total of 26 languages represented. Recently a number of students from China, Afghanistan, Egypt, India and other countries have arrived in our school with almost no spoken English. We have a strong ELD designated time to instruct our English Learners, but for newcomers we give them specific small group instruction at their level.

My Project

Since the beginning of the school year we have registered 20 new students from many different countries. These students are arriving with almost no spoken English. We have a system to help them to acquire English at their level when the other more proficient students are working at their English level. For these students, who are coming with different backgrounds and experiences and different native language levels, it is really difficult to fit in quickly. We use an online software program to add extra support to their learning. It is called Imagine Learning. It is designed to be used every day for at least 30 minutes, and is user friendly. The problem we have is that we need extra computers, so the students can have access to them constantly. We also use a software program for reading and math as an intervention tool. To have these extra computers will allow us to have resources they can use besides the small group instruction. We have also noticed that Imagine Learning acts as a motivator because they really like to use the computers. For many of them, this is the first time they have access to a device.
