Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school empowers 538 students in grades pre-k through five to follow their dreams. One hundred percent of students fall below the poverty line and are provided with free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students at our school strive to be the first college graduates in their families. However, many students are English Language Learners and thus struggle with reading. Many students come to school and talk about hearing gunshots last night, their parent being incarcerated, or their cousin getting killed in a drug-related incident.

My Project

I want to encourage playing games during recess time, rather than going on the computer or arguing with one another outside. Playing games promotes the development of social skills, gross and fine motor skills, sharing, health, patience, teamwork, leadership, taking turns, and cooperation through interaction with peers and adults. Playing games also promotes listening and speaking skills, and cognitive skills. Playing games inculcates discipline and playing within the rules. These activities for recess would offer a change from the monotony of their daily life. These activities would be entertaining, and would provide physical activity for them. Sports and games are ways of enhancing children's mental and physical growth.

Often, the physical needs of the students are overlooked.

I want to provide the best school atmosphere that I can and promote students' social/emotional skills. Many of these students do not have a lot toys at home, and I would like them to have the best possible school experience as possible.

My students love LEGOs, board games, and magnents for indoor recess. They will build things from their imaginations using LEGOs and magnetic shapes. They will surely create their own version of checkers. The remaining items will be used outdoors my all first grade students. The skip ball set and jump ropes will be used for individual and team games. Students will expend energy as they have fun. The champion catch ball set will be used by 2-6 studebts at a time. They will throw and catch the ball and build communication skills, focus, and teamwork.
