Help me give my students the opportunity to use their imaginations to design and build a LEGO Town with a LEGO Community Starter Set, vehicle set, minifigures, and more.

My students are an awesome, diverse group of kids ranging in ages from 6-13. Most are from Brooklyn, where our school is located and come to school by bus. For the most part, the students do come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and difficult situations in general. Many live in shelters and many, more often, lack the enriching experiences that are needed to anchor new knowledge.
It would be an oversimplification and wrong to only define them by their deficits, because they are amazing young people.
Funny, loving, honest, resilient, kind, and unique are some descriptions that come to mind when it comes to the students that I teach and learn from each day.
They attend a self-contained, therapeutic special needs school with smaller class sizes, increased staff to student ratios, along with counseling and a variety other related services to help them succeed academically, socially and emotionally.
My students will be working with their classes to plan and build a neighborhood community. This will take place over the course of a month, since I meet with classes once or twice a week for S.T.E.M. Before any actual building with the LEGO bricks and sets, classes are going to brainstorm what each neighborhood community needs to be safe and content.
After the initial planning process, each class will eventually focus on building one aspect of the neighborhood.
What they build will depend on their level of functioning. These individual projects will then be combined to form a whole neighborhood community. This way they are not only cooperating with their classmates, they are also working on a school-wide, inter-grade, collaborative effort.
