iMac+Student Filmmakers=Literacy+Math+Science+Art+Much More!

My students need an iMac to edit math instructional films, science and historical documentaries, public service announcements, school plays, news stories, and more!

This project expired on February 19, 2013.

My Students

270 sixth grade fingers in my classroom are ready to go to work everyday. 27 minds are ready to engage in meaningful lessons and projects. One goal is tops: learning! How best to integrate thinking, writing, reading, the sciences, the arts, math, and technology for ALL students? The answer? Film making

My students are a reflection of California's diversity: high, medium, and low socioeconomic levels; Asian, Latino, Black, White, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, American Indian students, and more; gifted learners and learning disabled; athletes and book worms; kids with physical disabilities others with health issues; kids fluent in English, others learning English, some speaking English plus two or three other languages!

Our school might be aging, but our teachers and students' passion for learning isn't waning! We are a California Distinguished School and an NCLB National Blue Ribbon School. Two years ago, I began using film making as a tool to engage students-to integrate writing with reading, new technology with old fashioned storytelling, math with art, collaborative teams with individual creativity. The results have been impressive! We've won awards at film festivals, created documentaries for non-profit foundations, and were hired by our city to create an instructional film!

My Project

As we've ramped up our film making activities, we've learned one thing: there is a LOT more we can do! This year we've been asked to create a series of public safety announcements for our school district on bus safety. We've been asked by our city to create three films for our integrated waste division. We recently acquired three Wacom tablets we are using to create math instructional videos to post on our YouTube Channel, Curiosity Films. We've been asked to share these films with California Mathematics Demonstration Center and Math Coaching Consortium. I operate a Film Academy two days a week after school which has swelled to 40 kids this year! These students want to tackle even more film projects! Documentaries on childhood diabetes, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, cancer. PSAs on bullying, internet safety, how to be polite, and school safety. We have PLENTY of ideas and eager kids. Our work flow is bottle necked! My students need an additional iMac to assist with their video editing.

Engaging students in meaningful learning experiences.

That's what my students need. Film making has proven to be an engaging way for kids to demonstrate what they are studying in ALL the content areas while simultaneously expressing their individuality. If you visit our YouTube Channel, Curiosity Films, you can see for yourself. My students love to learn. They love a challenge. With an iMac they can show the world what they know and and profoundly extend their learning in the process!
