My students need puzzle and game sets to support foundational language skills and build background knowledge in English in fun, engaging ways.

My Students
“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” –Fred Rogers. While increasingly lost amidst the academic pressures of middle school, playing to learn is still essential for growing pre-teens.
My ELLs, or English Language Learner students, are energetic, young pre-teens who come from a range of immigrant experiences and cultural backgrounds.
Their journey to master social and academic English is an uphill one. For many, the road is made more difficult by the social fears they face as adolescents and the gaps in knowledge that arise from the different approaches to schooling experienced in their home countries. I have ELLs who were star students in their home countries, but have now become very disheartened by their slipping report grades, which are normal and expected given the great linguistic obstacles they face. Finding creative solutions to keep their spirits up is not always easy when assignment after assignment pile on across their classes.
My Project
An array of word games, puzzles, and activities would be a wonderful addition to my classroom. So many of my students are well below grade level in foundational English skills, and need more of the fun, exploratory spirit of early elementary days that help make learning English feel like it's not such a chore. When I've borrowed the school library's Scrabble set for students in the past, it surprises me how engaged even my quietest of ELLs can get. Giving them the chance to experience other classics like Guess Who and Apples to Apples, with our very own classroom set, not only supports their language development, but critical thinking as well as they practice skills like questioning and comparison. There's no doubt that games have their role in promoting students' learning, and I want to be able to provide such opportunities for my often too discouraged ELLs.
So often my students are overwhelmed playing catch-up with their peers because of their limited English proficiency, and they have little time for a bit of childhood fun!
This project provides classic, engaging, learning-oriented materials that can bring some fun back into the classroom for my students while still supporting language growth. Your generous donations help ensure these kinds of tools are at my ELL students' disposal to reach their learning and development goals.
